The very clever possum - My animal report

 My Possum report

All about possums

We have lots of possums at our place. They only come out at nighttime (they are nocturnal).
They like the apple and willow trees the most. I have seen them taking the apples off the tree.
Possums come from Australia and some people put traps to catch them because they are a pest in New Zealand. We do not trap the possum at our place because I like them.

Dad and the Possum

My Dad patted a possum the other day because he thought it was our cat.
And I patted a baby possum once it was sitting in my shed.
My dad said he has seen possum steeling the chicken from the nest in the hay shed.
This is a photo I took of a possum on a cabbage tree outside our house.

Possum drawing

Here is a drawing of a possum.

Tail - they have thick fury tails
Feet - they have very sharp claws
Colour - they have dark fur that makes them hard to see at night.

  1. Hi James, what a great report on Possums. I laughed when I read the bit about your Dad patting one cause he thought it was your cat. Possums are kind of cute but I know farmers don't like them and they are not very good for our native birds as they steal the eggs.

  2. Wow James, what a great report, you have so many personal encounters with possums. I have to say I am not a fan of possums, I find the noise they make that sounds like they are laughing very creepy.

We have always trapped the possums at my parents place because my Dad worked for Manaaki Whenua (Landcare Research) and they are about protecting our native animals and plants, which possums destroy. I am glad you like possums though, was the baby possum soft to touch?

    1. Hi Miss Hart
We do trap the possums here as we do not have many native animal around us.
However we do trap them in Westport as they carry TB and this is bad for the cows.
